There are many free and inexpensive sound tools available that allow you to record, edit, convert, compress and listen to your sound files. There are also many sites on the Web with helpful information and wonderful libraries of music for you to enjoy. Listed below are just a few of the resources that I've found. Sound Tools

  • Explore the utilities and software that came with your sound card and operating system. They often can record from a variety of sources and save the files in a variety of formats.

  • Cool Edit 96 - A wonderful sound editor and player for Windows that allows you to record, edit, convert and save files in a very wide range of formats, including Real Audio. With a seperate add-in available on the site, you can also save the file in .mp2 format.

  • SoundApp - An award-winning sound player and converter for the MAC. It will play and convert many file formats including .mp2 and .mp3.
  • MacAmp and WinAmp - Great players for .mp2 and .mp3.
  • COWON Jet-Audio - A windows player that can play almost any audio or video file you'll find on the Web. It also plays your CD's and makes playlists and albums.
  • Real Producer G2 Encoder - This free encoder takes large audio files and compresses them so that they will travel much more quickly across the Web and can be played with the Real Player. It even helps write the code to make them stream from a normal Web server without special streaming software. It is available for many operating systems.
  • Real G2 Player and Plugin - Free player and plugin that plays both Real Audio and Real Video files. It is available for many operating systems.
  • Anvil Studio is a free program for Windows with which you can compose, mix, and edit MIDI and digital music for your site.
  • MidiGraphy - A Macintosh application that lets you play, edit and record midi files.
